Identification of Fabric Fibers

1. Cotton and Linen fibers

Both cotton and linen fibers are easily light up once close to the fire, which can be burnt very quickly, and their flames are yellowish tone with blueish smoke. While difference is that burnt cotton smells like paper and with grey or blackish ashes left over only. Then the plant ashes smell emitted by the burnt linen fibers, which has greyish white ashes.

2. Wool Fibers and Pure Silk

Once wool fiber is burnt, it comes with smoke immediately and bubbles can be seen from the burnt fibers, finally with a shiny black ball granule which is easily squashed. While flame runs a bit slowly, and smells stinky.

Pure Silk curled up when it is burnt, and with sizzling sound, stinky smells and flame runs slowly, finally get round blackish brown ashes, which can be easily crushed by hand. 

3. Nylon and Polyester

Nylon, official name is as—Polyamide, which is easily curled up once light it up, and comes with brown gummy fibers, almost no smoke can be seen, but smells very stinky.

Polyester full name is polyethylene glycol terephthalate, character is easy light up with black smoke, flame is in color yellow, no special smells, and after burning fiber comes with blackish granule, can hardly be squashed.
